I am back from an 11 day holiday in Italy! The use of the term holiday because it just sounds better than vacation doesn’t it?
I am happy to report there are Hawkeye and Husker fans traveling the world! Yes I know people go to Europe all the time but the fans I am talking about are wearing their colors with pride in a land where football really means soccer.
My first sighting was a Hawkeye fan in Siena, Italy. I was walking into the Piazza del Campo along with thousands of other tourists and what catches my eye. Not the buildings and architecture that dates back over 2000 years. Not the massive piazza that serves the nerve center and gathering place for millions each year from all corners of the globe.
Piazza del Campo |
What catches my eye is a hat about 20 feet away and walking right towards me. Grey with a yellow Tiger Hawk. I didn’t have enough to time (okay I didn’t think of it until later) to snap a picture for proof. As we passed each other I simply said “Go Hawks” in which he smiled, nodded his head and moved on.
I was beginning to lose hope that I would not find a Husker fan on the entire trip. The 11th hour was upon us and wouldn't you know the Big Red “N” shows itself in the wee hours of the morning in the Amsterdam airport. I have the pictures to prove it!
I guarantee the room is spinning on this Husker fan and not because of long trip! He arrived in Amsterdam after a holiday in Italy. Obviously he heard about the “Red Light District” but I wonder if he was disappointed that the “Red” was not “Nebraska Red” and no one was screaming, GOOOO… BIIIIG… REEEED... Go Big Red!
Reaction To the Red Light District |
I doubt it, the strippers in the windows and the contact high from all the “herb” in the air is a game changer if not a life changer. But like all true "fans" I’m sure he’ll be in the same condition at Saturday’s spring game!
