Call the timing a bid odd or even cowardly maybe, but Kirk Ferentz was left with no choice but to kick running back Adam Robinson off the team.
I don't the the Big 10 meetings in Chicago was the ideal place for the Iowa Head Football Coach to announce officially that his leading rusher the last two years was not coming back but for Ferentz it's par for the course. By making the "official" announcement in Chicago with not so many Iowa beat writers around he won't have to answer as many questions. He won't be probed and prodded but those with pens, digital recorders and cameras. Most of the media types that cover the Big 10 meetings are not there for this type of story. There are bigger issues to them, like a 9th conference game and where in the world are the conference championship games going to be played.
Call it a mutual decision, call it the final decision. No matter how hard Adam Robinson worked, no matter how much he showed remorse, no matter how much he asked for forgiveness, his former coach had no choice but the one that has been made.
Robinson is the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm sure he felt that way back in December but the cliche' really is true here.
All eyes are on Ferentz (as they should be) the coach has has taken a beating since last December and the last thing he want to come off as after all this is "soft".
From DJK, to Robinson to Rhabdo, every move Ferentz has made has been analysed, probed, scrutinized talked about. Robinson leaving the team is a combination of a lot of factors, he is paying for the sins of his former teammate and maybe even the head coach.
Ferentz know that an example must be set. On the field his teams are disciplined, off the field, not so much. He know what people say, he knows what people write and he knows what people broadcast. Casting Robinson out the door is the safe and yes politically correct move. Keeping him around and running the risk more problems just isn't worth it to the states highest paid employee, especially after the off season he has gone through.
Adam Robinson can learn from this. He's a great football player and teams, even Division 1 will want to take a chance on him. Robinson has not seen the end zone for the last time, but only he controls his own destiny.
Coach, good call! A hard one to make but in the end the right one.
