Big Bucks and Big Dreams

Joe Mogila is a man who follows his dream, granted his lives the dream with millions of dollars to his name serving as the Chairman of TD Ameritrade.

But Joe has a great story to tell before he made his millions, he was a football coach for 16 years.  Serving as the Defensive Coordinator at Dartmouth from 1981-83 before realizing the pay scale for an Ivy League assistant wasn’t paying the bills for his family.

Joe went to Wall Street and his skills as a coach helped him become one of the most successful CEO’s in the country.  He has authored two books, “The perimeter attack offense:  The Key to winning football” in 1982 and “Coach yourself to success: The key to winning the investment game” in 2005. I have known Joe personally for about ten years and when he told me he wanted to get back into coaching (at his age) I thought he was crazy.  But then I realized, this man driven.   Wired like nobody I’ve ever seen and people telling him no only motivates him.   I’ve said this before, great coaches will be successful at anything, including coaching a different sport or running a business (large or small).

Still serving as the Chairman of TDAmeritrade, Joe took on a volunteer position as an advisor to the Nebraska football team.  It was an even trade off, he could advise coaches and players and he could get brought up to speed on the game, after all the last time he coached was 1983.  Working for free pays off.
Joe now has been hired to be the President and Head Coach of the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL.  This league is a couple of years old and is fighting for survival.   With a guy like Joe Moglia working at it, I like the teams and League’s chances.
